This is an awards program developed jointly by the Special Forces Association and the U.S. Army ROTC/JROTC command. In November 2007, SFA Chapter 89 made the decision to sponsor this special program. The program is designed to recognize outstanding cadets in the junior and senior ROTC (ROTC and JROTC) programs in as many high schools or colleges in the vicinity of SFA Chapters and/or members of the SFA around the nation as possible.
It is an "Award of Excellence" made available to recognize
THE "Distinguished Military Science Cadet" of any given ROTC/JROTC Unit. The standard to be used for selection criteria is as follows:
"For Scholastic Excellence and Military Proficiency, in Keeping with the Traditions and Ideals of the U.S. Army Special Forces". The award is not limited to Army cadets, but cadets in Air Force, Navy and Marine ROTC programs as well.
Currently over 26 SFA Chapters and individual SFA members have adopted it as an ongoing program. The medal and ribbon presented is the ROTC and SFA approved standard medal set to be used for such presentations. The medal is NOT intended for any other purpose. In addition to the medal and ribbon an SFA Chapter 89 certificate is also presented to the cadet selected.
The cadet selected to receive this very prestigious award is selected by the individual ROTC/JROTC instructor staffs in accordance with the established criteria listed above. Additionally, the cadet selected to receive this award is required to be an American Citizen. Further, as this is an "Award of Excellence", created and intended to be presented to The Distinguished JROTC cadet, it is expected that the recipient will, in fact, be THE Distinguished Cadet of the school's program.
SFA Chapter 89 currently presents 13 medals and certificates to deserving JROTC cadets as selected by their respective JROTC instructor staffs. Presentations are made by SFA Chapter 89 members during the Annual JROTC Awards ceremonies, usually in April or May.
